The consequences of a brain injury vary among patients and may not be fully detected for weeks or months after impact. Researchers have found that victims of traumatic brain injury may suffer from personality disorders, irritability mood swings, depression and other cognitive defects. Now medical research is paying greater attention to the emotional impact of brain injury on veterans. According to a survey of more than 700 veterans with traumatic brain injury, 60 percent struggle with a neurological condition that caused them to lapse into uncontrollable laughter or tears.

Head injuries, including concussions and traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have lingering effects long after an initial impact. According to a new UK study, individuals who have been hospitalized for a mild head injury have nearly double the risk of dying within the next 15 years. This indicates that an injury can have an even more serious and deadly impact that first believed. The research, as published in The Guardian, indicates that individuals who suffered even a mild head injury were at a significantly higher risk of death than those with no history of head injury.

With so many troubling discoveries regarding brain injuries, the new research coming out of University of California Berkeley is more than welcome. Our brain injury lawyers recently wrote about hockey player taking legal action against the NCAA. The players allege that the collegiate athletic association should be held responsible for its role in contributing to brain injuries. Brain injuries are a major concern among athletes, but athletes are not the only ones who can suffer trauma to the head that leads to a brain injury. Brain injuries are damaging to victims for many reasons including the fact that a blow to the head can cause potentially permanent damage to the brain and can increase the risk of dementia and other serious medical conditions. A part of the problem associated with severe brain injury, however, also stems from the fact that it is often difficult to know just how badly the brain was harmed by trauma or what the lasting effects of the trauma will be. The New York Times recently discussed new tests for brain trauma that could create new hope among victims, but that are also being met with skepticism.

Experienced brain injury attorneys know that falls and car accidents are two of the top causes of injury to the brain. Since many auto accidents and slip and falls happen because someone is negligent, it is not uncommon for personal injury lawsuits to be filed based on a brain injury occurring. Concussions, the most common type of brain injury, are widely viewed as not being all that serious. The reality, however, is that even a simple concussion can do lasting damage.
