Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan will be hosting Saturday Night Live soon, and, as part of a promo for the upcoming show, Morgan can be seen with fellow cast members joking about the fact that he is still recovering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) he recently suffered and for which he is still recovering.   Morgan was involved in a serious car accident that left him in a coma for eight days. Morgan said when he finally woke up and was told he had been in a serious car accident, he was just thrilled to learn the accident was not his fault. This type of joke at his own expense is very much in the style of his standup comedy.

774605_car_accident_2Morgan’s car accident occurred in the summer of 2014 and left him with several broken bones as well as head trauma, which resulted in the traumatic brain injury.   He was riding in his limo at the time of the accident when a truck hit them from behind, causing the car crash. While there have been a lot of advances in the fields of neurology and neurosurgery as a result of the many soldiers injured in the global war on terror, traumatic brain injury still presents many mysteries to surgeons and those in the allied medical community who work with head injury victims.

According to a recent news article from the UCLA Newsroom, a new study has shown that eating high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) can actually hamper a victim’s recovery from traumatic brain injury (TBI).   The study was done using laboratory rats that had suffered traumatic brain injury. According to a recent feature from Time, a new report has found a connection between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and energy drinks in teens. The report writers surveyed teen brain injury victims to see if they had reported drinking large amounts of energy drinks in their respective daily lives prior to suffering the TBI. They found an alarmingly high number of victims had been drinking the energy drinks.

redbullAs a control, they also asked teens of the same age who had not suffered a traumatic brain injury and the percentage of teens who had not consumed energy drinks was considerably and significantly lower. In trying to prove causation, there has been difficulty finding why chemically and biologically this would be occurring, but the survey results clearly indicate some level of relationship. A traumatic brain injury can leave a victim with unimaginable consequences. A person who was once an intelligent and outgoing individual with a bright future may be left unable to perform even the most basic tasks learned during childhood.

Some people will be fortunate to regain most or even all of their mental and physical abilities, and others will never recover at all. Continue reading

According to a recent article in the Boston Globe, a woman who lived in Chinatown was walking near her home on a Wednesday morning when another woman allegedly bumped into her. This woman, prosecutors say, has a criminal record consisting of charges for violent and erratic behavior.

When victim hit the ground, her head slammed against the pavement. Prosecutors say alleged assailant kept moving but told prosecutors she heard people asking if victim was OK. First responders treated victim following the accident, and they took her to Tufts Medical Center, which is a level-one trauma center located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston. Doctors diagnosed her with a fractured skull and a brain hemorrhage. They took her into emergency surgery to control the bleeding in her brain, but her injuries were too substantial, and she soon died. Continue reading

A traumatic brain injury or “TBI” can have serious effects on victims that can last the rest of their lives if they are fortunate to survive the initial trauma. Those who suffer a traumatic brain injury may have difficulty with both long- and short-term memory, performing tasks requiring use of motor skills, automatic bodily functions, and concentration and cognitive abilities.

brainscan.jpgSome of this damage will never go away, while some of the symptoms can improve though hard work, determination and a very lengthy rehabilitation process. That process is too often not only extensive, but extremely expensive. It is costly not only in terms of medicals bills, but in the financial hardship associated with not being able to work.

To help traumatic brain injury patients, scientists are working on new techniques in the operating room and during the rehabilitation process. While they are making daily progress, many researchers rely on grants to fund their expensive research. According to a recent news article from NJBIZ, $6.3 million in new grants have been awarded to help with their ongoing efforts.

In recent years, doctors and researchers have made a great deal of progress in development of new treatments for traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. A lot of these advances were made possible through the sacrifices of those who suffered from TBIs as result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The reason for this is that, in some ways, these wars were very different form past conflicts, especially with respect to medical treatment options for injured soldiers.

brainscan.jpgIn past wars, such as Vietnam, most soldiers who suffered serious head trauma did not survive. There was no way to get them the immediate medical attention necessary to treat their serious injuries. Today, soldiers who are wounded are sometimes airlifted to technologically advanced Combat Support Hospitals (CSHs) to be stabilized, and then airlifted to a military hospital in Germany for treatment. After treatment, these wounded warriors are sent back to hospitals in the United States. With all of these TBI patients in need of help, there was a greater opportunity for research and demand for new techniques, which has been able to offer some help to TBI victims never available in the past.

While many head injuries occurred in war zones, thousands of civilians are injured every year in accidents throughout the United States, and many of these patients also suffer a TBI. These new treatment options developed through military medicine can now be used to aid civilian patients back home.

March is National Traumatic Brain Injury month in the United States.

According to a recent traumatic brain injury (TBI) feature in Appalachian State University News, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimated that 2.4 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury each year. More than 2.5 million traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are suffered annually in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most of these TBIs happen because of falls, car accidents or acts of violence. Most go unnoticed, except by the victim who is affected and the family members of the person whose life has been changed forever. brain copy.jpg

Recently, however, the issue of traumatic brain injury has been making headlines because the victim in one particular accident was a famous comedian.

When Tracy Morgan was involved in a near-fatal motor vehicle collision with a Wal-Mart truck, the comedian’s plight caught the attention of the press and the public. Now, Bloomberg is one of many news outfits publishing articles discussing how the brain injuries he suffered will impact the rest of his life.

Bicycle riding is a popular way to get around Boston and many major metropolitan areas in the United States and bicycle share programs have been making it easier for more people than ever to commute via bike. Unfortunately, recent studies suggest that in cities with bike share programs, there is dramatic increase in the number of people who experience brain injury. no--bicycles-1444541-m.jpg

Brain injury can have devastating and lasting effects and can be very costly to treat. Unfortunately, bicycle accidents leading to brain injury frequently occur because drivers fail to share the road in a safe way with bicycle riders. When a driver is to blame for causing a brain injury, he becomes responsible for compensating the victim or his family members for the economic and non-financial costs of the injury. An experienced Boston brain injury lawyer should be consulted to provide assistance to those who wish to take legal action after a bicycle accident.
