On June 12, 20 year old Gabriella Lowell was walking along Grafton Street, about a half-mile from her home. Lowell was walking home from a nearby McDonald’s around 9:00 pm. She was in a marked cross-walk, approximately three quarters of the way to the other side of the road when she was struck by an SUV. Ms. Lowell was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died from her injuries.
The driver, a 21 year old, stopped at the scene and cooperated with police. The driver was visibly emotional and could be seen crying while talking to investigators. No charges were issued at the time.
On Tuesday, police did issue charges against the driver, who is now facing one count each of motor vehicle homicide, operating a motor vehicle to endanger and distracted driving. The basis of the distracted driving charge is not clear at this time.
Worcester police declined to identify the driver, citing a department policy not to release the names of arrested suspects.
